Four Steps of a Skincare Routine

What are the four steps of a skincare routine?

Too many beauty magazines and social media influencers make it look like you need an extensive skincare routine with 10+ steps to get flawless skin. This is completely untrue and can be discouraging for beginners who are just starting to take care of their bodies.

I firmly believe you need to get your basics right before you start adding in a bunch of extra steps in your skincare routine that might not even be necessary.

So here are the four steps of a skincare routine that is beginner-friendly and will get you amazing results!

Step 1: Cleanse

Every day sweat, dirt, and sebum accumulate on our faces. Furthermore, the makeup we apply increases the amount of impurities on our faces. These impurities can block pores and lead to acne breakouts, inflammation, redness, and other problems. So, cleansing your face is the first step in your skincare regimen.

In general, it’s ideal to cleanse your face twice a day, first thing in the morning and before going to bed. Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type and avoid harsh cleansing products that can be too harsh and drying on your skin.

I like to use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip my skin of its natural oils.

Step 2: Tone

Toning your skin is essential to removing any leftover impurities from your cleanser and restoring your skin’s pH balance. It also helps to prepare your skin for the next step in your skincare routine.

Adding a toner to your beauty routine can help your skin absorb nutrients more efficiently from moisturizers, serums, and essences. Toners also hydrate and soothe your skin.

Plus, toners serve different purposes, such as correcting dull skin, brightening complexions, or reducing the appearance of wrinkles. So, choose a toner that is suited for your skin type and addresses your skin concern.

Step 3: Moisturize

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. After cleansing and toning, it’s important to moisturize your skin to keep it healthy and hydrated.

Moisturizers hydrate, nourish and protect the skin’s barrier by preventing moisture loss from your skin. Plus, it prevents the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines as it locks in your moisture.

Choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type and needs.

Step 4: Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the most vital part of any skincare routine. Most often, people tend to neglect it. Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays that can cause long-term damage to your skin, such as early aging, fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and even skin cancer.

Make sure you use sunscreen every day, even if you’re just staying indoors. Choose a sunscreen with atleast 30+ SPF, and the label indicates that it is “broad spectrum protection.” Apply it 30 minutes before going out to ensure maximum protection.

Reapply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours, especially if you’re sweating or swimming.

Bonus Point: Serum & Exfoliants

I left out serum and exfoliation in my four steps of a skincare routine since I wanted to make it more manageable and easier for beginners. In my other blog posts, I will provide you with information on serum and exfoliants, their benefits, and how to incorporate them into your own skincare routine.

Bottom Line

A skin care regimen does not need to be complicated or time-consuming. You can reap all of the benefits with these four simple steps in your skincare routine. Once you’ve mastered and organized your regimen, you can add more advanced steps on top of it. But make sure to use high-quality products that suit your skin type and address your needs.
